What are tariffs?
  • Tariffs are hidden taxes. They raise prices on things Americans buy every day, including American-made products.
  • Tariffs can be applied to whole products or component parts think of the thousands of components that make up smartphones, dishwashers, automobiles and medicines.
  • Tariffs create uncertainty and make it difficult for retail businesses that rely on complicated global supply chains.
  • American families will see higher prices in every retail store and every online merchant even small mom-and-pop retailers on Main Street.
  • We’ve tried tariffs before. They didn’t work. In fact, they made things worse.
Tariffs aren't boring,
they're scary!
In 1930, Congress enacted the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act, which raised tariffs and caused the U.S. economy to sink deeper into the Great Depression. Today, Washington has a plan for a new trade war with new tariffs, which will make many items we buy more expensive. These price increases are an unnecessary tax on every American family. It’s simple: Trade wars are BAD economics.
Tariffs are taxes. These taxes will ultimately be paid by U.S. businesses and consumers in the form of higher prices on every product. Hardworking American families should not be forced to pay the price for other countries’ unfair trade practices. These practices must be stopped, but tariffs are not the answer.
